In 1981, Whim ‘n Rhythm was established with the goal of providing a senior performance group for women on campus. Now, Whim is an all-gender group of soprano-alto singers that has been to six continents and recorded many, many albums. The best part of Whim is that this experience comes at no cost to members of the group. The world tour and album are funded by a combination of revenue from performances and domestic tours, and generous donations from those who support Whim’s vision. Speaking with alums of the group—even those who participated in other ensembles on campus—their time in Whim is often an unparalleled highlight of their extracurricular experience at Yale. It is a unique opportunity for talented seniors to come together and create something that is entirely their own: a unique repertoire, performance calendar, and brand. The Whim Class of 2024 is dedicated to bolstering the values of equity, diversity and global citizenship into its mission. Contributions toward our organization will allow our members to share their talent and hard work with an international community of musicians and music lovers. In addition to the world tour, a hallmark of Whim is the domestic “hometown” tour where we get to perform in cities and towns where our members grew up. Some members would love to have us in their hometowns, but cannot fit us all in their homes. In addition to raising money, Whim hopes to connect to a larger community of potential hosts and music enthusiasts who can support a greater number of hometown tours in the coming years.
